I Have An Addiction

Some of you know that I have a passion for reading. This love I have for the written word is something that I have always had. I can thank Moms for this as she has always been an avid reader and passed this love for books along to both me and La Hermana.

Last year I even went so far as to challenge myself to see if I could read more than one book per month. I was able to crush that and finish with a total of 24! I was quite proud of myself. If you are interested you can see which books I read in 2007 by clicking here. For 2008 I had a much loftier goal. Publicly I stated that I wanted to at least read more than I did in 2007. Privately I wanted to read 30 books. As of this post I am half of the way through book 29 with six weeks to go. That should be plenty of time for me to hit my goal barring any external issues. Here is my 2008 list.

On top of reading books I also have an infatuation with purchasing books. There are times when I just know it is a bad idea to go into a book store becasue I might go crazy. Last night would have been one of those times. Luckily we had only entered the Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree has the distinction of being a great store for books. Generally they will have some known books but mostly they are ones from authors that I am not familiar. The are almost always hardcover, which I prefer, and are always the same price. $1.00 each!

Now you can’t beat that price ever. So as the wife and I walked in my shakes kicked in and I dragged her to the aisle with the books. I saw one that looked pretty interesting…then another…and another…it was a flurry of books! My mind understands that they are so cheap and I go nuts.

I bought five books last night to add to the huge pile that I have put together thoughout this year:

The Great Fire by Shirley Hazzard Hooking Up by Tom Wolfe It's Superman by Tom De Haven The Devil's Teeth by Susan Casey Legion Of The Lost by Jaime Salazar
(Click on the book covers for reviews.)

Most addictions should be dealt with and squashed. If you try and break me of this one I may have to hurt you. Wish me luck with my reading. I sure hope that I can find the time to read them all. Oh and if you find any good cheap places for books like Dollar Tree or Goodwill please let me know.
