I really get a kick out of election day. I feel empowered and patriotic and become slightly giddy when I head in to vote. Everyone at our polling center is so friendly, always smiling and oh so helpful. Luckily, per usual, our voting center was basically empty. When the wife and I strolled in to the county courthouse we were already next in line to vote. It is so grand.
When I parked myself behind my ballot I was already sure as to which candidate I was going to vote for President. I cruised through that choice with no problems. It was when I got to the secondary elections that I hit a bump. Since I was 18 years old I have been a registered Republican. I admit that. I tend to lean in the direction in my beliefs. I have never voted anything but Republican in any election that I can remember and one race had me scratching my head.
Here is a sample ballot for Marshall county:
My big issue with this ballot, and I guess any election for that matter, not unlike Freaky Weasel’s issue, is the race for the Tennessee House of Representatives in District 65. Yeah, that’s right I only got one dude to choose from. What kind of election is that? I need choices man! So I did what anyone else that lives in my head would have done. I gave myself a second choice and then I picked that guy. Who was that second choice? It was me beyotches, I voted for myself. This just in…I didn’t win.
No I do not consider this wasting my vote. I don’t know who this Eddie Bass character is and I bet we do not agree on lots of stuff but that other guy, the one I voted for…ME, yeah well I agree with EVERYTHING he stands for. Can you say that about anyone else that you voted for today? I didn’t think so.
Well, anyway as far as the Presidential race goes I actually did not vote for my normal party. Sorry John McCain. I bet you Obama fans are really excited that you dragged another elephant boy over to your side. Well you would be wrong. I didn’t vote Democrat either.
I went with Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party. Why? I have many reasons and I don’t feel like listing them now. I know that if you didn’t think I tossed my vote away before by voting for myself that I threw it away with this one. I would have to say that you are wrong again. I think that the two party system is a sham anyway and this was my little voice being put out there and making a tiny little statement. Remember that it isn’t a wasted vote unless you didn’t vote at all.
By the way, this whole “voting for myself” thing gave me a real rush. It got me thinking that maybe a sign in everyone’s yard in the future that reads “LeBlanc 2012” sure conjures up a pretty picture.
