It Is Star Time Again

So I have been thinking of creating a button and making this a big deal for me to single some bloggers out. Would that be cool? Let me know please. Anyway, I can’t believe that July is over already. Next thing you know it will be Christmas again. Well here is this month’s starred items, enjoy!

Be sure to keep visiting these people’s sites and to keep on writing stuff so that I can like enough to post it back over here. If I get enough good stuff from ya’ll I don’t have to write anything of real substance. Thanks for helping me be lazy!

Star

From A Kroger

The School Girl and I went to the local Kroger the other day for our semi-regular supermarket sweep. A couple of things stand out in my mind from this trip.

We saw an interesting item on the outskirts of the produce department. It was a whole bit of horseradish (that I pronounce incorrectly as “horsh-radis”). I asked aloud about the name of this item, more specifically as to how it came about obtaining the moniker. The wife had no idea so I posed the following theory:

me: Maybe it’s named this because it is a type of root-ish thing just like a radish…and because it’s shaped like a horse penis. Maybe?

The School Girl: Uhh, I doubt it. **shakes head** **rolls eyes**

Horseradish

Near the end of our excursion the cart had become overflowing with grocerial matter and we scooted into the checkout lane of a seemingly nice young man who appeared to be closed or closing. He was nice enough to scan our stuff even though we had more than enough to fill the conveyor belt. Eventually, he handed me my receipt and he made me feel a bit piggish.

Check out boy: Wow, and this isn’t even the biggest grocery bill I’ve had tonight!

How wonderful. Maybe we should consider getting less stuff next week…or going more frequently.

These Are So Sweet I May Get Diabetes

My wife has been wearing out the camera taking pictures of these new kittens that we obtained a couple months back**.

Here are a few that I think are just to cute NOT to share:

Paige & Piper

If I am not careful my site may end up being like this guy’s! Just kidding.

** By the way, it is official, they are two females so we ended up going with Piper and Paige for the names. I still think they should be Martha Jones & Rose Tyler…

Super Sweet 16

Why is this little girl crying mere minutes after returning from a family trip to Florida during her birthday?

Teen Girl

Is it the shock of turning 16 and realizing that life is all up hill from here on out? Was she sad to see her aunt & uncle (that would be The School Girl and yours truly, respectively) come over for a visit after a long ride in the family van? Is it that she remembers the start of school is just around the corner?

Nope.

It is the pure joy that can only be expressed with tears then smiles as she sees her sweet sixteen gift pull into the drive way.

Her new car

Happy birthday little lady.

A Natural Deficiency Of Wordle

Let’s see now, I saw this thing at many people’s blogs: The Ride Home, Theology & Geometry, This Is LaVergne, TN, High Holy Mass Of Contradictions, and many others. So what did I do, well I stole it for myself:

My Wordle

Go try it out yourself over here.

Who’s Next?

I was watching the VH1 Rock Honors show tonight featuring The Who and it reminded me about how much I effing love this band. I remember when I was a kid in elementary school and I think HBO was showing a special concert of The Who like every other day. It was their Farewell Concert (we all know how that worked out) and I was just mesmerized. I am pretty sure it was the next day that I hopped on my bike and rode (without permission) all the way downtown to buy the LP that was pressed to immortalize this concert, Who’s Last. I still have that record and it is scratch free, by the way. Anyway, I just wanted to share my favorite Who song from my favorite Who album:

A Sports Renaissance

This afternoon with the Red Sox losing a second straight game to the rival New York Yankees I found myself utterly disgusted. My boys are wallowing in 2nd place and making my childhood nerves get rattled again. It then occurred to me that I just need to relax. I mean, what is the worst thing that could happen? They don’t make the playoffs. In the grand scheme of things this is nothing. Throughout my life they mostly did not make the playoffs, and the same goes for most of my favorite sports teams and athletes, but I have recently become like those sports fans that complain when my team doesn’t win it all every single year.

During this decade that is the 2000s I have been blessed with some really good sports moments. I searched through Wikipedia just to scratch the surface and came up with these gems:

2000 -
Tiger Woods wins US Open, British Open & PGA Championship

2001-
Tiger Woods wins the Masters

2002-
The New England Patriots win Super Bowl XXXVI
The University of Miami wins the NCAA Football National Championship
Tiger Woods wins the Masters and US Open

2003-
Syracuse University wins the NCAA Basketball National Championship

2004-
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. wins the Daytona 500
The Boston Red Sox win the World Series
The New England Patriots win Super Bowl XXXVIII

2005-
The New England Patriots win Super Bowl XXXIX
Tiger Woods wins the Masters & British Open

2006-
Tiger Woods wins the British Open & PGA Championship

2007-
The Boston Red Sox win the World Series
The New Enlgand Patriots play in for the AFC Championship

2008-
The New England Patriots play in Super Bowl XLII
Tiger Woods wins the US Open
The Boston Celtics win the NBA Championship

Now, of course, this is only a partial list. I didn’t even mention that the Nashville Predators made the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Boston College won the NCAA Hockey National Championship, UMass won the NCAA I-AA Football National Championship and I could pull many more out of the wood work if I really researched it. What I am trying to say? Well I guess that I am a pretty darned lucky sports fan, most people can’t say that.

Fenway Park

Just for the record I root for the following teams/athletes:

Boston Red Sox
Boston Celtics
Boston Bruins
New England Patriots
Nashville Predators
Tennessee Titans
Boston College
University of Massachusetts
University of Miami-Florida
Syracuse University
Vanderbilt University
Belmont University
Tiger Woods
Dale Earnhardt, Jr
Chicago Cubs

I think that gets them all…

Feel Good Friday Saturday

Well, I missed the good feelings yesterday so I am posting my feel good song today. Here is a great rock tune from the 90s, Tesla’s “What You Give“. This band rules!

Here are a few of yesterday’s players that got posting on time: Jag, Slarti, Ginger, ‘Coma, Heartbreaktown and Squirrel Queen. I know I missed a few players but you know who you are.

Have a good Saturday!

Counting My Blessings: Week 4

Now we have the fourth installment of my series in which I was challenged by blogger Blessed1 from Daily Blessings. You can read part one by clicking here, part two by clicking here and part three by clicking here.

Well, where to go for part four? I think that this time I will talk about young ones. I thought about going with just my son, Little Harry, but I think I will encompass all of the little people for this.

Children are truly a blessing all by themselves. For me they make me feel younger even though at times my son makes me feel ancient (he is almost 15 ya’ll!). They make me feel important. They need help for lots of tasks. They require information. You know what I am talking about…questions, questions, questions. Most importantly is the fact that they are so innocent. It makes my heart swell to know that they are sheltered from a lot of the stuff that can make the world stop going round and round.

Without the children we wouldn’t have a legitimate reason to play with those Legos or that Star Wars video game or read the Golden Books. The kids help invigorate me even though sometimes I think they may youth-enize me. My children, my nephews and neices, my friend’s kids, the little ones in the stores that smile at you just because you smiled first, all of them are blessings.

Daily Blessings

Be sure to go visit Daily Blessing by clicking above. You can assist me in “winning” her contest that she is running and like myself will find yourself smiling at the wonderful blessings that have been bestowed my someone living life like it should be lived.

Snake & The Evil One: Politics And Ponies

I heard another great story about my 8 year old nephew Snake today from his mom, La Hermana. The boy is spending time at camp this week. This camp is much more serious than when I went to camp and worried about when to swim versus how long ago I had drank a slushee. Snake came home and told his mom about their discussion on politics.

The boy starts telling everyone how he learned that a woman was running for President. This (paraphrased but amazingly accurate) exchange took place:

Snake: I don’t want her to be President.

La Hermana: Why?

Snake: Because she will make a law that everyone will have to get a pony for their birthday!

La Hermana: Really?

Snake: Then she will make a law that boys will have to wear dresses…and high-heels!

If this isn’t the best I don’t know what is. I like to think that he honestly has that tiny little fear in him about the dresses…hehehe.

This sort of makes me think of this from everyone’s favorite television show:

Wal-Mart Sign Fail

The School Girl and I made a quick run over to the Wal-Mart Garden Center just a little bit ago. We were greeted by a nice older woman and this spectacularly incorrect sign:

Wal-Mart English Fail

Wal-Mart English Fail 2

This stuff is addictive. I look for errors everywhere now. FAIL rules!

I Am Feeling Old School

After hearing a great live show last night from Flat Rock Revival, I am still feeling in the mood to rock. My aging body won’t stay awake long enough to do more than post this great tune. Here is a live version from 1972 of The Faces doing “Miss Judy’s Farm“.

I can’t believe how underrated this band has been over the years! They are one of my all time favorites.

Please Someone Jam Something In My Ears!

A while back G-Man and I attended a Will Hoge concert here in Nashville. On our way out of the venue we were handed a copy each of a free CD. I have never been one to turn down something free, especially free tunes.

When I first listened to this disc I was stunned. I wish I could tell you that it was amazing. It was the complete opposite of amazing. It was pure turds and vomit. The music itself wasn’t too terrible but the vocals, yikes! I mean sure the guy can’t sing to save his life but the lyrics…oh my goodness, are they just horrendous. Here is an example:

The flesh is sizzling,
Limb muscles twitching,
Deep tissues pulling where the boiling blood anoints.

The bones are cracking,
The cracks leak marrow,
Bubbling as the firebarbs pry the joints.

Beautiful stuff, right? Man is that nasty. The artist is Rich Shapero from his album called The Ram: Wild Animus. From what I understand this is the first of 3 concept albums that go along with a book about a guy who turns into a ram. I am not making this stuff up ya’ll. Maybe it would have been better if there was at least one chorus on the album. I couldn’t find one.

The Ram

If you go to this guy’s website you can listen to and download the entire album for free I think. Click here to make your ears bleed.

As a joke I gave this CD to Uncle Grizz. I let him know that it was not good but it was so bad in fact that when was finished he should randomly pass it to someone he knows to share this monstosity of craptastic noise and tell them to do the same when they were finished. It has been about a year since I gave him the disc and it has now made its way back me. The best part for me was to see Grizz’s note that was stuck to the front, I think it says it all.

Grizz Note

Who wants my copy. I am definitely willing to part with it…again!

Don’t Be Jealous Of My Skills

I saw this several places this past week but over here first.

Apparently I am just one heck of a husband…in the 1930s…

As a 1930s husband, I am
Very Superior

Take the test!

Why don’t you see how well you do. Just dare to be better than me!

Scenes From Nashville: Flat Rock Revival CD Release Party

Last night we all headed to downtown Nashville for the CD release party of local artists Flat Rock Revival. All of you who missed the show should be kicking yourselves. It was standing room only. They managed to sell out of Bud Light & Miller Light. Dang there were a lot of people there last night.
